Origin: One of the earliest settlements in the state, Greenland was a parish of Portsmouth originating in 1638. It was probably named for Henry Greenland, a town officer. Residents requested and were granted a separate town in 1704. In that same period, Leonard Weeks constructed a substantial brick house, thought to be the oldest brick house in New Hampshire still standing.

Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 634 residents in 1790

Decennial growth rates ranged from a 16 percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 66 percent increase between 1950-1960. Over fifty years, Greenland's population increased by 2,489 residents, going from 719 in 1950 to 3,208 residents in 2000.
