Origin: Once part of Dover and Durham called Barbados because of trade with the island, this town was the farm of Sir Francis Champernowne of Greenland. Sir Francis'' English home was called Modbury, and the name Madbury is in its honor. Madbury Parish was granted for the first time in 1755, and town privileges were granted in 1768. The name Barbados is still used for several natural features of the area.

Population Trends: Population in Madbury grew about three times larger over the last five decades. Decennial growth rates were around the statewide average, ranging from a seven percent increase between 1990-2000 to a 42 percent increase between 1980-1990. Madbury''s population increased by a total of 1,020 residents, going from 489 in 1950 to 1,509 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Madbury was 1,633 residents, which ranked 153rd among New Hampshire''s incorporated cities and towns.

Population Density, 2004: 141.5 persons per square mile of land area. Madbury contains 11.5 square miles of land area and 0.6 square miles of inland water area.
