Incorporated: 1820

Origin: First settled prior to the Revolution, this town takes its name from the county in which it is located. Earl of Strafford was a title of the Wentworth family in England. The name was also adopted by a state militia company in Dover, the Strafford Guards, who later became part of the New Hampshire National Guard. Strafford includes the village of Bow Lake.

Strafford''s population has grown well above the statewide average rate over four of the last five decades. After decreasing by six percent between 1950-1960, decennial growth rates peaked at a 78 percent increase between 1980-1990. Over fifty years, Strafford''s population increased by a total of 2,856 residents, going from 770 in 1950 to 3,626 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Strafford was 3,953 residents, which ranked 92nd among New Hampshire''s incorporated cities and towns.

80.7 persons per square mile of land area. Strafford contains 49.0 square miles of land area and 2.2 square miles of inland water area.
